چکیده
Ultrafast laser pulses can be used to drive materials into nonequilibrium states that have unusual properties and are promising for technological applications. Different classes of phenomena observed during after the optical illumination. This Colloquium discusses recent developments in this field, prospects using these techniques create with novel functionalities a controlled way.

Combining nonthermal technologies to control foodborne microorganisms.
Novel nonthermal processes, such as high hydrostatic pressure (HHP), pulsed electric fields (PEFs), ionizing radiation and ultrasonication, are able to inactivate microorganisms at ambient or sublethal temperatures. Many of these processes require very high treatment intensities, however, to achieve adequate microbial destruction in low-acid foods. Combining nonthermal processes with convention...

15 صفحه اولMolecular dynamics studies of ultrafast laser-induced nonthermal melting
Molecular Dynamics (MD) is employed to investigate nonthermal melting triggered by coherent phonon excitation in bismuth telluride, which has Peierls distortion in the lattice structure. Results showed that the structural distortion caused by coherent phonons appears as early as 80 fs, while it takes several picoseconds for the whole phononexcited area to evolve into a liquid state. It was also...
متن کاملDetection of nonthermal melting by ultrafast X-ray diffraction.
Using ultrafast, time-resolved, 1.54 angstrom x-ray diffraction, thermal and ultrafast nonthermal melting of germanium, involving passage through nonequilibrium extreme states of matter, was observed. Such ultrafast, optical-pump, x-ray diffraction probe measurements provide a way to study many other transient processes in physics, chemistry, and biology, including direct observation of the ato...
